Continuing PRMI’s series on remodeling, here are some pointers for turning your master bedroom into your dream sanctuary.

Color in your style.

Choose your color scheme before you start your renovation. This will be far easier than trying to get a mismatched item to work later.

Looking at too many colors at once can be overwhelming and stressful. You want your bedroom to be comfortable and relaxing, so keep your color scheme simple.

Pick one main color, a secondary color, and an accent color. Your accent color should be on the opposite side of the color wheel than your main color. Use the primary color about 60% of the time. Use the secondary color 20% of the time as a changeup. Then use the accent color 10% of the time to make things pop.

You don’t need absolutely everything in the room to fit the color scheme, but there should be enough to establish the pattern.

Go to bed.

Since your bed will most likely be the main feature in the room (it is a bedroom after all), find the right one.

First, measure the room so you know how big your bed can be. Get a bed big enough to sleep in comfortably while still leaving yourself space for everything else you want in your bedroom. Plus, you’ll still need room to move around. Go ahead a get a nice big bed, as long as you have the space for it.

Test your mattress before you buy it, if possible. Consider how you sleep and any special needs you might have. For example, if you tend to sleep on your side you might want a different type of mattress than someone who sleeps on their back.

If you’d like to take things a step further, consider adding a bit of luxury with a canopy or put your bed on risers for a grandiose feel.

Make your bed and lie in it.

It can be tempting to go all-in for style on your bedding, but remember you’ll be sleeping there, so it also needs to feel comfortable. Choose your linens and pillowcases based on comfort. Leave the style to the bedspread and throw pillows.

Keep your color scheme in mind when you buy your new comforter and pillows, but don’t go overboard with your pillows. While they look great on a perfectly made bed, extra pillows just add clutter when you have to move them to sleep at night.

Get the light right.

Consider both the light fixtures themselves, and the actual light in the room, including any natural light coming in through the windows.

Replacing light fixtures is a quick and easy way to spruce up any room. You could also install ornate wall lighting for added effect.

Consider changing the bulbs in your light fixtures to smart bulbs that let you adjust the color and brightness. Set the bulbs to dim automatically at bedtime and brighten in the morning to customize the feel of the room for a more restful sleep.

Hang some windows coverings to block access light that shines in to help ensure a good night’s rest. The right curtains or shades will also give your bedroom a touch of class.

The lighting in a room can affect the color, so address the lighting before you paint anything.

Put paint in its place.

Once you’ve got your colors, bed and lighting figured out, you can take everything out and paint.

Painting is an inexpensive way to give any room a facelift. But don’t oversaturate your walls with intense colors. Sometimes, just painting one wall an accent color can make a world of difference.

Stick to your color scheme and follow the design guidelines mentioned in the color section earlier. Lighter colors usually work better on walls and ceilings.

You could also go with wallpaper. Adding decorative wallpaper to one or more walls can give your bedroom a regal look. Just keep in mind, wallpaper is generally more difficult to install than paint, especially if you prefer to do it yourself.

Fill in the furniture.

Lots of bedroom furniture can be purchased as a set or individually. You might be ready for a new dresser, matching nightstands and a headboard. Or you might just need a new bookshelf to match your new color scheme. This is great time to invest in some quality furniture that will last for years.

Modern bedrooms also often have TVs or computer desks. If you have electronics in your master bedroom, get some cord ties or organizers. Wires running every which way along the walls and floors will make even a clean room feel cluttered.

Don’t forget the budget.

The cost of renovating your master bedroom can vary greatly depending on the work required. A little paint and some new bedding can make a big difference in the look and feel of your bedroom without costing a lot of money. Bigger projects, like replacing carpet or flooring or installing new windows, will take a bigger budget.
