I don’t like coffee. Notice I didn’t say that I hate coffee, because that’s not the case, I simply just don’t enjoy it. I believe there are three types of coffee drinkers in this world: the fanatics, the haters, and then there’s the inbetweeners, like me. It’s not like I have a problem with coffee, actually I really wish I liked it. Let me explain. I’m not a morning person at all, and I could use that caffeine boost early in the morning (especially after landing an 8-5 office job)! Even though it can be complicated, there are steps we could take to escape the middle ground. After playing around with different options myself, I think I’m starting to become one of those people. You guessed it, a fanatic. Let me tell you how you could do this as well.

  1. Answer the question “What coffee have I tried?”. Think about your personal answer to this, and come up with ways to expand your own coffee palette. From black coffee to frappuccinos, there are tons of options and different blends when it comes to finding a coffee you like. My colleague started with a McDonald’s medium cup of black coffee, adding three creamers and three sugars. Don’t judge the coffee, judge the sweetness. You just need a foundation to build on. This leads me to my next point.

  2. Find your brand. Are you a Starbucks kind of person? What about Dunkin' Donuts or your local coffee shop? Find your favorite and become familiar with it. Once you get comfortable with a coffee you enjoy, save the four bucks you’re spending each morning and make it at home. A lot of coffee shops sell their famous blends, but you can find something similar at the grocery store to save money and a trip to the cafe.

  3. If all else fails and you still can’t bring yourself to drink coffee, there are alternatives for that extra little boost. While green tea and energy drinks are the most popular alternatives, you could also go the healthy route by drinking water. At the end of the day, you just have to find something that works for you. Experiment with different drinks, in moderation of course, and you’ll find your groove in no time!

While I still can’t enjoy every single blend of coffee, I’m so glad that I have found coffee that I genuinely enjoy. Remember to push yourself out of your comfort zone, and definitely don’t take coffee for granted. It might just be the boost you needed to get your day off to a great start!
